Quilter - Artiste - Courtepointière

Ammaji Ka Sangeet, 2004
23" x 30"
This is my first quilt in a contemporary style.
Music is a great source of inspiration in my family. My mother-in-law played and taught many Indian classical instruments including the ‘sitar’ and the ‘tanpura’, the subject of this quilt. The melody of Twamev Mata is quilted on the background while its words speak of inner strength. These words echo those of a conversation I had with my husband’s grandmother who encouraged me to believe in my talents and to pursue my dreams. This quilt honours both grandmothers’ songs.
Raw-edge fused appliqué, couched golden strings, golden lamé, cotton. Machine quilted. Original design. Private collection.
